How grants actually work

3 August 2026 · Superteam Argentina · 5 min

Grants are the most misunderstood thing in the ecosystem. People assume they are a formality, or that they are impossible. They are neither — but the two doors marked "grant" lead to very different rooms, and walking into the wrong one costs months.

Two doors, and they are not the same size

Solana Foundation Argentina Grants — up to 10,000 USDG, a rolling pipeline. This is the quick starter. It exists to help somebody who already has proof of work turn it into the next concrete milestone. Superteam Argentina sources applicants, helps define a grant-sized scope, does the local due diligence and recommends the strong ones.

Worth being exact about that word: we recommend, we do not decide. The Solana Foundation retains the final decision, the grant agreement, KYC and payout authority. A local recommendation is a real advantage — somebody has vouched for you after looking at your work — but it is not funding.

Solana Foundation grants, the global programme — bigger cheques, and a genuinely different process. Letters of intent, evidence of traction, ecosystem-wide impact you can argue for with numbers. Months, not weeks.

This is the part people get wrong: the global programme is not a kickstarter. It is not where you go to begin. It is where you go once something is already working and you need to make it work at a scale you cannot self-fund. Applying there with an idea and a repo is how you spend six weeks learning that.

If you are early and Argentine, start with the regional pathway. If your project outgrows it, that is the moment for the Foundation — and we will make the introduction rather than let you cold-start it.

What the money is for

Future work. Not a prize for a pitch deck, not reimbursement for something already finished, not a substitute for investment.

The strongest application shows four things: what already exists, what the ecosystem needs, why Solana specifically, and exactly what new result the money unlocks.

We do not fund token launches with no product, marketing budgets, or a founder's salary for exploring an idea. If the grant is the reason the project exists, it is not a fit.

What we actually read

The application is short on purpose. Four things carry it:

  1. Proof of work. A repo, a deployed contract, a product with users. Anything we can click. This weighs more than everything else combined.
  2. A specific ask. "8,000 to pay a second engineer for three months to ship X" beats "10,000 for development".
  3. Milestones somebody can check. What is true in ninety days that is not true today?
  4. Why you. Not credentials — context. Why is this the team that finishes it.

What happens after you send it

We review on a rolling basis and you hear back either way. A rejection with a reason is still a reply, and we would rather give you one than leave you refreshing an inbox.

If we recommend you, the Foundation runs its own process — agreement, KYC, payment. That takes as long as it takes and it is not ours to speed up. Knowing that in advance is better than discovering it while you wait.

If it is a no, ask what would change our mind. Several teams have come back three months later with the missing piece.

Before you apply

Come to an event. Post in the forum. Ship something small and show us.

The teams that get recommended are almost never strangers — not because we play favourites, but because we have watched them work. That is the whole advantage of being in a chapter rather than filling in a form on the internet.

The best grant application is the one where we already know the answer before we read it.
